SPECIAL EDUCATION UNIT

The Special Education Unit based at the Weipa Campus of WCC has of this year moved to a larger classroom to cater for the growth in student numbers, and new staff members. Our new premises have been remodelled thanks to the enormous generosity of John & Cathy Kennedy, who have turned an empty spare room into a kitchenette so as the students can partake in a functional life-skills program. This program helps students to learn the basic skills such as cooking, cleaning, social skills and etiquette and more importantly to become an independent person in their own right.

One of the many projects that have emerged from our little kitchenette is BBB   which    is   the   logo   for   Billys
Beautiful  Biscuits.   One  of  our  senior

students Billy has a passion for cooking and he cooks a variety of biscuits to a set clientele each week.Order forms are sent out, he collects and collates orders and cooks enough biscuits to fill his orders. They are then packed and hand delivered to clients. All proceeds from this biscuit venture are channelled back into the Special Education Unit to buy much needed resources. BBB has helped purchase a larger fridge to keep student and staff lunches in and so we can store bulk cooking ingredients as well.

Keep tuned for further news of our grand Kitchen opening...
